Who lives longer, fast or slow walkers? British study
Take a walk after a meal and lives longer to be 99. Our people have attached great importance to their physical health since ancient times. In our concept, walking is also a way to exercise the body. However, in the process of walking, some people walk fast and some people walk slowly.
In the past, we often believed that walking speed was related to a person’s personality. For example, people with straightforward personalities walked faster, while people with gentle personalities walked slower. Of course, this does not rule out the possibility that people are in a hurry.
However, in the view of some foreign experts, the speed of walking does not reflect a person’s personality, but is closely related to a person’s physical condition. The University of Leicester in the UK even conducted special research on this phenomenon and finally found that people who walk fast may live longer than those who walk slowly. Why is this?
Contrast: Walking and Resting
Although our physical condition is much better than that of people in the past few decades, the probability of illness among our younger generation is also increasing significantly, and the physical condition is also showing a downward trend, a large part of the reason for which is the lack of exercise.
To give a very simple example, office workers sit in front of computers for a long time to work. In the long run, the spine and eyes will suffer serious damage. Therefore, many people develop the habit of hunching their backs and bending their waists. Moreover, due to the lack of regular exercise, such people are prone to become the “main force” of obesity.
Secondly, the same phenomenon also happens to today’s students. I believe everyone has experienced military training at the beginning of the school year. In the past, we participated in military training to hone our will.
But today, more and more students experience physical discomfort during military training. This has led the elders into a misunderstanding, thinking that each generation is worse than the previous one . But in fact, the poor physical fitness of today’s students is also due to lack of exercise. Just imagine, a student can sit in the classroom for a whole day.
The daily pressure of schoolwork and the physical education classes that may be withdrawn at any time will cause students to have some degree of problems in their bodies. Therefore, exercise and continuous laziness and rest will have completely different effects on people’s bodies. In this case, walking is definitely our best choice for simple exercise.
As mentioned earlier, the University of Leicester in the UK has set up a special research team to conduct a detailed investigation into human behavior and walking habits. After a period of data statistics, it was found that people who walk faster will live longer, while in comparison, people who walk slower will have a shorter life span.
For example, the elderly with an average life expectancy of around 86 years walk faster, while the elderly with an average life expectancy of only around 76 years walk slower. In other words, people who walk faster live longer than those who walk slower, and the age difference between the two can be up to more than ten years. Why is this?
The relationship between walking and life expectancy
In fact, the speed of walking cannot completely determine a person’s life span. It can only reflect a person’s physical health level to a certain extent. According to our common concept, the healthier a person is, the longer his life span will be. In other words, the length of life is affected by many factors, and walking speed is just one of them.
When traveling, we often see some young elderly people. They always have smiles on their faces and are in excellent spirits. They look no different from young people. We all know that this is basically the result of long-term maintenance and exercise of the elderly.
Generally speaking, human exercise level is closely related to the body’s metabolism . During exercise, people who walk fast tend to consume more physical energy, and their metabolic rate will increase accordingly . This results in basically no excess impurities in their bodies. Therefore, they look younger and in better condition.
Secondly, walking can be regarded as exercise. People who walk fast will have a higher exercise efficiency. The frequency of their arm swings and the number of steps they take will be correspondingly higher . In this process, their arms, feet and other parts will be effectively used. Therefore, they will be more energetic in terms of health and living conditions.
From the above, we can see that there may not be a completely equal relationship between human walking speed and life span, but people who walk fast are healthier and live younger, therefore, giving people a feeling of longer life.
Of course, this does not mean that people who walk slowly should learn from those who walk fast and try their best to increase their walking speed. Although walking fast is good for human health, the elderly and those with weak hearts should still maintain a stable walking speed to avoid putting too much load on the body.
Slowing down of walking speed
In fact, our walking speed is not stable and constant. To give a simple example, when we listen to relaxing and cheerful songs, our walking speed is often in tune with the beat of the song. When we are in a complicated mood or in a bad state, a slow walk will become the best way to relieve our emotions.
But if people pay close attention to their footsteps, they will find that their walking speed has actually slowed down invisibly, because we are used to using various means of transportation to walk , so now we use our feet to walk and run much less time.
In addition, if we sit for long periods of time and do not exercise, our physical condition will invisibly become worse, especially the strength of the bones in our legs will decrease. This causes many people to feel surprised the first moment they land and walk: my walking speed has slowed down.
In short, if we want to be healthier, look younger and live longer, we should increaseExercising is a good habit, and walking is definitely the most cost-effective one.
Conclusion
From the above, we can see that people who walk fast are in better physical condition and therefore live longer, while the opposite is true for people who walk slowly. This phenomenon is closely related to our physical activities.
