I don’t know since when, the saying “children grow taller only when they go to bed early” has become more and more popular. Let’s know some about eight sleep.

So starting at 8 o’clock every day, many parents urge their children to go to bed. Whether the child wants it or not, he must go to bed and lie down until he falls asleep.

Because fertility experts say: There are two peak periods for human growth hormone secretion, one is at 9 pm and the other is at 5 am. In order not to miss these two peak periods, the baby should fall asleep before 9 pm, otherwise the baby will not grow taller.

    But what is the reality?

Some netizens discovered that this view actually originated from a news report in a newspaper in 2012, “Sleep has become the number one external factor affecting children’s growth”!

Do you see the point clearly?

This view is not stated by any authoritative organization, nor is it based on data proven through many experiments. It does not have any scientific basis.

Regarding the secretion of growth hormone, today we will take a closer look.

Growth hormone (HGH) is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. As its name suggests, its main function is to promote the growth of human tissues . Therefore, growth hormone is closely related to human development, and of course it is an important factor affecting height.

However, there are many factors that affect human body height. Abnormal growth hormone may lead to abnormal development and “dwarfism”; but normal growth hormone does not necessarily guarantee growth because there are other genetic factors that work together.

    Growth harmone

Growth hormone is secreted every day in the human body in a pulsating manner , with more secretion sometimes and less secretion sometimes, with peaks and troughs . Studies have found that the secretion of growth hormone is likely to be related to sleep: the first NREM period when the human body falls asleep is the peak of growth hormone secretion, and 50% of the growth hormone will be secreted throughout the day!

Simply put, the peak period of growth hormone secretion occurs one hour after falling asleep .

The child falls asleep at 8:30 p.m., and the peak period of growth hormone secretion arrives at around 9:30 p.m., reaching 50% of the day’s secretion.

When the child goes to bed at 11 o’clock, the peak period will come around 12 o’clock, and the secretion will also be 50%.

The peak time of growth hormone secretion is based on the time when the child sleeps. Instead of having a fixed time point, the child arranges sleep accordingly.

Putting the cart before the horse!

Studies have show that the secretion of growth hormone varies from person to person, and its peak value is determine according to the time when different people fall asleep, rather than being secreted at a fixed point! Therefore, it actually doesn’t matter what time the child goes to bed at night; anyway, about an hour after falling asleep, growth hormone secretion begins to peak again!

Sleep is very important for children’s growth, but it is not the sleep time that affects the child’s growth, but the sleep duration!

That is to say, whether the child sleeps for enough time and whether the sleep quality is good or not. These are important factors that affect the child’s development and growth.

If your child is going to bed late, as long as the duration is sufficient. And the quality of sleep is good. It will not affect his growth hormone secretion.

    Today’s children

And today’s children have to attend various interest classes and cram schools after school. Even if they don’t have to attend these classes. It’s almost 7-8 o’clock after they finish their homework and have dinner.

There is also bath time, rest time, reading and play time, etc. After such a set of procedures, it is really difficult to go to bed at 8:30. It may even affect the child’s health.

Doctors suggest that taking a bath immediately after a meal. That will affect the normal digestive function of the stomach and intestines. It is best to wait half an hour after a meal before taking a bath.

And it is not recommend to go to bed immediately after taking a bath. Finally, blow dry your hair and dry the body to allow the body temperature raised. The hot bath to return to normal temperature before going to sleep.

Of course, the editor is just refuting the rumor that “the peak period of growth hormone secretion is between 9 and 5 o’clock”. It is not encouraging children to go to bed late.

For families with the habit of going to bed early and getting up early. It is of course great to arrange their children’s schedules properly and ensure good sleep quality!
