When talking about AIDS phobia, we have to talk about HIV infection first. HIV-infected people are mainly in the acute or asymptomatic stage of AIDS, while AIDS patients have entered the AIDS stage, which is the final stage after being infected with the HIV virus.

What this means is that after HIV infection, some patients experience acute symptoms, while others are asymptomatic. Of course, the AIDS stage refers to HIV infection that progresses to the AIDS stage when
the virus load is not controlled through untreated medication. At this point, any treatment only prolongs life. Acute symptoms are characterized by acute damage to the immune system caused by the rising virus load, ultimately leading to flu-like symptoms.

These symptoms include fever, fatigue, diarrhea, cough, muscle aches, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. However, these symptoms are non-specific, and HIV infection is ultimately diagnosed through testing, not symptoms. ( Some of the patients I see come to me with fever and other symptoms, while others come to me after having problems with blood tests in other departments .) The information in parentheses is based on my own observations.

Don’t assume you’re infected simply because you have similar symptoms. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, some colleagues in my department tested positive for nucleic acid but had almost no symptoms. Therefore, testing is the gold standard for detecting HIV infection. This is common knowledge and well-researched, so I won’t elaborate further. If you’d like to learn more, please leave a comment and I’ll respond.

    Let’s talk about AIDS phobia

What are the typical symptoms of AIDS phobia: Anxiety limited to a specific fear object or situation (AIDS). Patients have unusual anxiety and fear about AIDS or the possibility of having AIDS. Most patients can recognize that these fears are excessive and unreasonable, but they still cannot control this fear. These are AIDS phobia, that is, manifestations of AIDS phobia.

Why is there fear of AIDS?

It’s nothing more than a psychological state caused by behaviors or the influence of close friends, media coverage, or online searches. HIV is only transmitted through a few routes; it can’t be spread outside the body. When bloggers suggest that being splashed with toilet water or coming into contact with bodily fluids can lead to infection, those with HIV phobia feel a renewed sense of dread. They feel like they’re exposed to HIV daily and that infection is only a matter of time. This is a devastating blow to those with HIV phobia. None of my patients have been infected through these types of circumstances, nor have any been infected through the use of protective measures. I’ll discuss specific high-risk behaviors and populations in future articles.

    Treatment of AIDS phobia

There are two ways to treat AIDS phobia: one is medication and the other is psychotherapy .

Drug treatment is actually for phobias and depression. This treatment method is not common, and the main treatment method is still psychotherapy .

There are several types of psychotherapy, which depend on the condition of each patient. For those with mild AIDS phobia, I will teach you a few simple relief methods.

    1. What is AIDS? Understand the transmission routes and treatment methods of AIDS

    2. As I just mentioned, after understanding AIDS, we should eliminate previous misconceptions and not cling to them.

    3. Talk to your trusted relatives, friends, doctors, etc. and get their understanding and support.

    4. Divert attention and cover up your fear with busyness, such as exercise, socializing, etc.

Eliminating HIV phobia takes time and effort, but it can be overcome and cured. Eliminating HIV phobia can be achieved through the right understanding, support, and skills.

I wish everyone can get rid of fear as soon as possible and face life better.
